Executive Summary

Today, April 16, 2026, Focusing on Young Nurses Initiative (FYNI) hosted an exclusive webinar featuring Dr. Ndagi Alhassan, the Registrar and CEO of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The session provided critical updates on the newly approved Centralized Nursing Internship Scheme, designed to standardize proficiency and eliminate the difficulties nurses face when searching for placement.

Key Updates & Implementation Status

Implementation Status: The centralization scheme is currently in the processing and budgeting phase following approval by the Honorable Minister of Health.

The Transition Period: As this year’s budget has already been passed, the Council is exploring supplementary budget provisions to accommodate the scheme’s kickoff.

Placement Modalities: For the first batch, the NMCN will conduct a general posting.

Subsequent batches will use a dedicated portal where interns can select their preferred service points.

Expansion of Centers: The Council is seeking approval to utilize facilities beyond Federal Medical Centers and teaching hospitals, including military, police, and specialized hospitals, to ensure all graduates are accommodated.

Degree vs. HND Pathways: The Registrar clarified that Degree graduates undergo Internship, whereas HND graduates are required to complete Industrial Attachment. Modalities for HND attachments are currently being finalized.

Official Advice: Until the central portal is officially launched, Dr. Alhassan urges prospective interns to remain calm and continue seeking placements at accredited hospitals independently to ensure they do not remain idle.

Licensing: Interns are to use the temporary license issued during their induction for their internship period. Remuneration: Once implemented, payment will be centralized and equitable across all service points to ensure fairness.

Backlog Issues: Consideration for retrospective placements (backlogs) will depend on the final government approval and financial provisions.

Professional Charge to the New Generation: Dr. Alhassan concluded with a charge to all nurses to prioritize professional attitude and service over monetary gain. He emphasized the responsible use of social media and the importance of clinical excellence in improving maternal and national health outcomes.

Signed, Focusing on Young Nurses Initiative (FYNI).
