Finding My Path: A Mentee’s Journey Through The FYNI Mentorship Academy
Nurse Olabisi Ogbeide’s FYNI mentorship academy experience is a strong testament to the immeasurable value mentees enjoy. By going through FYN’s mentorship academy, you position yourself for all-around success and are equipped with relevant leadership skills and tools to become a purpose-driven registered nurse.
“There were so many meaningful moments throughout the program—from reaching career clarity to executing a project I truly believed in. One highlight was creating awareness on available helplines and support systems for survivors of sexual abuse.”
During the COVID-19 lockdown, I stumbled upon the Institute of Nursing Research (INR) conference quite by accident.
At the time, I had a growing curiosity about nursing research and decided to explore further.
What I didn’t expect was to hear from a speaker who completely shifted my perspective.
Her passion was so palpable that I found myself thinking, “This is who I want to become.”
That experience lit a fire in me!
I began following INR’s activities more closely, joined a research training cohort, and continued learning every weekend.
Eventually, I saw the call for applications to the FYNI Mentorship Academy—and I knew I had to apply.
A Timely Turning Point
At the time I joined the academy, I was at a crossroads.
After over a decade working in both private and government healthcare settings—and receiving multiple awards for excellence—I still felt unfulfilled.
Something was missing.
I kept asking myself, “What’s next?”
The mentorship program helped me answer that question.
Through honest conversations with my mentor, I gained clarity about my career direction.
He asked me a simple but powerful question: “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?”
That conversation helped me realize that I wanted to move into academia—while still maintaining a connection to clinical practice.
It was a revelation.
I had finally found direction, and I began making concrete preparations to pursue that goal.
The Power of Mentorship

My mentor didn’t just guide me—he offered actionable advice and even recommended institutions where I could begin lecturing.
That kind of support is invaluable.
My team lead was equally incredible—knowledgeable, approachable, and always ready to encourage me when I felt unsure.
Together, they helped me realize that the aspirations I once doubted were actually achievable.
Through this program, I also gained a network.
I’m still in contact with my co-mentee from Ogbomosho.
We support each other, share knowledge, and collaborate when needed.
The relationships built through FYNI are ones I truly value.
Meaningful Moments and Impactful Skills
“My mentor didn’t just guide me—he offered actionable advice and even recommended institutions where I could begin lecturing. That kind of support is invaluable.”
There were so many meaningful moments throughout the program—from reaching career clarity to executing a project I truly believed in.
One highlight was creating awareness on available helplines and support systems for survivors of sexual abuse.
I visited key centers in Yaba, Ikeja, and the Ministry of Education to gather accurate information, created educational materials, and facilitated a health talk at a secondary school.
Seeing students engage, ask questions, and show genuine interest gave me a sense of fulfilment I’ll never forget.
Beyond the project, I developed vital skills: public speaking, perseverance, resilience, lobbying, and a deeper understanding of navigating public systems.
These have stayed with me and continue to shape my professional journey.
Redefining Leadership and Mentorship
This program also reshaped how I see leadership.
I used to believe leaders simply led while others followed.
Now I understand leadership as supporting, guiding, and inspiring others to believe in their own potential—even in the face of challenges.
Mentorship, too, is more than just sharing knowledge.
It’s about meeting people where they are, walking with them through uncertainty, and helping them see what’s possible.
To Future Applicants
To anyone considering the FYNI Mentorship Academy—don’t hesitate.
Hurry up and apply.
Yes, it involves work, but the growth, clarity, and support you’ll receive are unmatched.
You’ll come out of the program more focused, more confident, and more empowered.
It changed my life, and I believe it can change yours too.
